In many parts of Afghanistan private
housing as well as public buildings has
been destroyed due to warfare. The
inhabitants took refuge in the
neighbouring countries or in other parts
of Afghanistan. Since the collapse of
Kabul regime in April 1992, more than 3
million people have returned to
Afghanistan, but still more than 2.6
million Afghan refugees are living in
Iran and Pakistan.
Reconstruction of houses is one of the
main rehabilitation priorities stated by
both returning refugees and those who
have remained in Afghanistan.
